⟡ Wasted Food at Stocklmier Elementary School

Over the past few years, food has been neglected at Stocklmeir Elementary School, Sunnyvale CA. Students have been throwing and pushing food off the trays where the hot lunch lines are at Stocklmeir. Students of Stocklmier have been wasting their food and leaving it on the blacktop, with loads of items that were unopened.

Milk cartons, apple slices, vegetables, and many more items are left on the blacktop multiple times in a school day. Students walk past all the wasted food every single day but don't have the heart to take one second to throw it away to make their school 1% cleaner.

On October 20, 2021 Tanisha Chatterjee observed all the 3rd graders during their lunch break. Tanisha saw multiple kids throwing food at each other, and running to play without throwing away their trash. "All of these students feel like if they spend a few seconds throwing away their trash, their entire playtime will be over," Tanisha says. Tanisha continues observing the students. Tanisha also notices that only about 5% of the students who were at lunch threw away their trash. While the rest ran to play.

If this problem does not stop soon, food will start piling up on the blacktop. Sooner or later the students will need to start taking responsibility for their own trash before their lunch even might be taken away from them.
