⟡ Vote No for Chocolate Milk

At the beginning of the school year at Stocklmeir we had chocolate milk but eventually the school stopped providing it for us. Some people believe that chocolate milk should still be provided while others think it shouldn't. Because of this people are reconsidering their decision about chocolate milk. I believe that chocolate milk should not be brought back to school because it's unhealthy, kids get addicted, and parents and experts agree.

Critics like the article Flavored Milk FAQ argue that children drink more milk when it's flavored which makes them gain more vitamins and nutrients. While it might be true that children drink more milk, still, all in all, I think that if children are only drinking milk when it's flavored, is a big problem because in life children won't always get what they want. So one reason why I vote no to chocolate milk is because it's unhealthy. According to Chocolate Milk: More Harmful than Healthful, "chocolate milk has a sky-high sugar content." This shows that chocolate milk has a lot of sugar, which means that if kids drink too much of it they might become obese. When kids drink a lot of sugar they tend to get very hyper, which is a big problem considering that they will be in class learning. So when kids start getting hyper they are unable to focus and they not only disturb their learning but the students around them as well. According to Jamie Oliver, a food lover and activist, states that, "sugary drinks are a major risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease." This shows that children could be at risk of developing a deadly disease that adults could have prevented. Also children may even die because heart disease is very dangerous. Ann Cooper, the head of nutrition services for the Boulder Valley School District in Louisville, Colorado, was the cause of the chocolate milk ban. This shows that even nutritionists believe that chocolate milk is unhealthy. It also shows that nutritionists think that white milk or other options are healthier than chocolate milk. As you can see, chocolate milk is unhealthy because it has too much sugar and because it can cause diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Another reason why chocolate milk should not be brought back to Stocklmeir is because kids get addicted. According to the article Chocolate Milk: More Harmful Than Healthful, states that, "some children consume as many as 10 or even 15 cartons of chocolate milk in a week at school." This shows that kids are getting more and more addicted day by day. Also if children are drinking this much sugar they won't feel hungry enough to be able to eat healthy nutritious food. Jamie Oliver, an expert, filled a school bus with 57 tons of sand, representing the amount of sugar children in the United States consume in just one week at school. This shows that students are consuming an absurd amount of sugar. 57 tons is also 114,000 pounds! Children need to stop consuming all this sugar otherwise they will suffer a big consequence like falling severely sick. Chole Baker, an investigative reporter, stated that, "it's an out-of-control problem." This shows that even outsiders believe that children are becoming wildly addicted to sugar. To add on, obesity remains a growing problem in the United States. Since this is happening schools have been getting more attention from people outside of schools, which shows that the problem is getting even more terrible. Thus, children all around the world could be saved from this villain (chocolate milk) that we can easily get rid of. Therefore, we should not bring back chocolate milk because kids get addicted. Some people like Melissa Dobbins still may disagree, saying that chocolate milk is critical for a child's diet. I challenge this. I don't think this is true because there are different alternatives to milk that have the same 9 essential nutrients like milk or cheese. Also chocolate milk also has too much sugar which is not good for kids.

My most important reason why chocolate milk should not be brought back to school is because parents and experts agree. Chloe Baker, an investigative reporter, interviewed a child who stated, "The only time I get chocolate milk is when I go to school." This shows that even parents think that chocolate milk isn't a healthy choice for their child. Also if a parent is not comfortable about something at home then it's not okay for it to happen at school. New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, was among those people who agreed with the ban. This shows that the problem has gotten so bad that it has even reached a city mayor who agrees with the ban. And since the government probably wants what's best for us we should believe them. Also the New York City Board of Health approved the ban. This shows that even experts believe chocolate milk is very unhealthy and is not safe for our community. And since the problem is so bad the board even decided to go as far as banning it. Therefore, chocolate milk should not be brought back to Stocklmeir because parents and experts agree.

I vote no on chocolate milk because it isn't good for our bodies, children drink too much of it, and experts and parents agree with the ban. As you can see chocolate milk may have some good parts to it but overall it's better to avoid it because it doesn't do much good as it does harm. Lastly, the life lesson here is that it's important to protect our community by keeping it healthy and keeping it happy and we can do this by just avoiding our villain (chocolate milk). So when you decide to vote if chocolate milk should be brought back to school, think about all the healthy lives you could save and protect from all of those cruel diseases.
